Leroy Harkless

A time to be Born… Leroy Harkless was born to the late Charles Harkless, Sr. and Rosa Mae Flemming Harkless on February 29, 1952 in Florence, South Carolina. Leroy was the fifth of nine children—Dorothy Curry (deceased); Maggie Holmes (deceased), Charles Harkless, Jr. (deceased); Margarita Harkless (deceased); Janelle Harkless; Francine Blackwell; Lawrence Harkless (deceased); and Denise Congo (deceased). A time to Live… Leroy Harkless and his family moved here from Timmonsville, South Carolina to Washington D.C. where he adopted the nations capital as his new home. Growing up, Leroy was a very athletic person and enjoyed playing basketball as well as running track. He attended Ballou High School and graduated in 1969. Upon graduation, Leroy went to work for his uncle Willie Harkless, who owns the Harkless Construction Company. He loved working with his hands whether it was repairing a car, brick laying, road repairs, or painting a house. He really enjoyed his craft. In his younger days, you could find him on the basketball court showing off his skills as he dominated his opponents. Back in the day, he was a stylish man and very particular with his appearance even down to the car he drove. A time to Love… He enjoyed spending time with his children and his grandchildren. Always telling them to get your education and don't get caught up out here in the streets. Those were always his words to his grandchildren. He would also let his children know how proud he was of them and how they accomplished so much. Leroy always praised his children. A time to Embrace… Leroy leaves behind five beautiful children who he absolutely loved and adored—Darrell Edwards (Anna Edwards) with Patricia Perkins; Vianca Harkless-Walker (Ronald Walker Jr.) with Judy Anderson of 14 years of marriage; Nika Cooper-Dorsey (James Dorsey) with Maxine Cooper (deceased); Leroy Harkless and India Partee with Milvara Partee-Hodge. Leroy also leaves behind a host of grand and great-grandchildren— Laila Harkless, Zoey Howard, Leroy Harkless Jr., Ia'bella Coleman, and Brooklynn Harkless; Jaelia Dorsey, Nikquan Cooper, and Jonte Watts; Ronald Walker III, Raevon Walker, Rashod Walker, Taniya Walker, Tiyana Walker; Shaquanda Winters, Kahlif Edwards, Ayanna Edwards, Khristian Edwards; Amina Walker and Channing Winters. A time to Rejoice… On Monday, May 2, 2016, Leroy was greeted by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Glory.
