Lois J. Higgs

Lois Josephine Higgs of Deale, MD passed away Thursday, June 9th, 2016 in the hospital with her family after a lengthy illness. Born Lois Josephine Crites on August 18th, 1940 on her grandfather’s farm to Roy Columbus and Beulah Crites in Petersburg, West Virginia. She moved to the District of Columbia when she was a child. She married her love Richard M. Higgs on May 17th, 1958 and spent the next 40 years raising her family and at his side until his passing on May 21st, 1997. She worked in the book bindery at Editor’s Press, Merkle Press, and Judd & Detwielers until 1989. She loved country music, spending time with her friends at the North Beach Senior Center, shopping, and watching the Washington Redskins. Lois is survived by her siblings: Roy Columbus Crites, Jr., Mary & Phillip Cockrell (sister- and brother-in-law), Frances Aceto Fusco (sister-in-law); children: Richard Charles Higgs (Angela), Teresa Ann Higgs Ferguson, Stephen Martin Higgs (Kathlyine Strickland), Jennifer Lynn Higgs Carter (Daniel), and Heidi Renee Ferguson (Kenneth); grandchildren: James David Leonard (Tiffany Hilton Nenno), Richard Julian Higgs (Samantha Davis), Andrew Kenneth Higgs, Brandie Strickland, Danielle Simmons (Michael Lovato), Brian Matthew Carter, Kenneth David Ferguson, Jr., and Kevin Michael Ferguson; great-grandchildren: Jordan Riggleman, Lilly Leonard, Laela Nenno, Joey Nenno, Savannah Maria Davis, and Richard Alexander Davis; and numerous other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents, Roy Columbus Crites Sr. and Beulah Hartman Crites, father and mother in law Charles E. and Grace (Wedding) Higgs, her husband Richard Martin Higgs and numerous other brothers and sisters in laws.
