Louis James Martucci was born on the 23rd day of May in 1938. He was raised in Long Island, NY as a son of an Italian immigrant, Salvatore James Martucci and his beloved mother, Giovanna. He was the first male son in his family to get a college education, attending Villanova, Brooklyn School of Law and the University of Baltimore, where he graduated in 1965. After that, he went on to serve as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County until 1969, when he made the move to the private practice as a Criminal Defense Attorney. Louis J. Martucci, or 'Lou" as most of us called him, was widely recognized as one of the top criminal lawyers in Prince George’s County for over 50 years. He will be remembered as “one of the best”. Lou was a Sole practitioner and somewhat of an anomaly in a world of large law firms and high hourly fees at the time he began. He only charged a flat fee to his clients to defend them in court and he took many cases on a pro bono basis. He accomplished his goals in his profession by working harder than most and mastering the art of compromise, which resonated in over 50 years of success as a defense attorney. He believed that the criminal system must change for the better and that it was his duty to represent and defend the downtrodden and the oppressed. In 1997, Judge Vincent Femia made a statement about Lou’s ability to win over a jury when he said, “…he sold that jury chicken feathers when they thought they were getting chicken soup.” Many would consider Lou a good friend, and one thing he had was many friends. His son would say, “Lou would meet strangers and they’d walk away as friends”. If Lou were to respond, he’d most likely quote Will Rogers by saying “I’ve never met a man I didn’t like”. You could say that he always considered you innocent before proven guilty and maybe that absence of pre-judgement to new relationships is why he came to know so many as friends and defended his clients so well. He had a special something about him that made you want to engage in conversation with him; he was genuine, charismatic and memorable. Let’s not forget that he was also a very good musician, a man of many talents. He learned to play the piano as a young child and carried on that love of music for the remainder of his life. We will never forget him. Lou died at the age of 81 years, the morning of the 29th of November 2019 at his home in Owings, MD. He was survived by his wife and best friend for over 35 years, Nancy J. Martucci. He was also a father to his son Brian Martucci and daughter in-law Sarah Jordan, his son Steven Martucci and daughter-in-law Tammy, and his stepson Michael Vermillion. He was Papa Lou to two beautiful granddaughters, and he was a brother to Robert “Bob” Martucci and his sister-in-law, Sally. Rest in peace Lou. We love you and will miss you.
