Lyle Lincoln

Lyle Albert Lincoln, 92, of Broomes Island Road, Saint Leonard, died on Thursday morning, June 4, 2020 at Calvert Memorial Hospital. He was born February 26, 1928 in Hornell, NY; the son of the late John Lincoln and Cecelia Whitford. Lyle served 2 terms of service as a Machinist Mate in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Intrepid, where he earned the Victory Medal and China Medal, for service during the Korean War and World War II. His military career was cut short when he contracted tuberculosis, while serving over in Asia and was discharged with a 100% service connected wartime disability. He required years of hospitalizations over the next couple of years. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Irene Ann Latimer, at a Saint Valentine’s Day dance in 1950. They were married shortly after that, on September 10, 1950. Over the course of their 68 years of marriage, they had 4 children: Linda A. Ketcher, Lyle A. Lincoln, Jr., Paul A. Lincoln, and Mark A. Lincoln. After the military, Lyle tried his hand at multiple jobs, ranging from being a radio disc jockey, and even played in a country western band, “Country Cousins”. He was a talented musician and was gifted at being able to pick up the guitar and mandolin and play by ear. Over the years he even played with Ricky Skaggs when he first started out. Lyle then went back to school and got his broadcasting license and went to work for the United States Intelligence Agency, “The Voice of America”, as a broadcasting engineer. During his tenure there, he did quite a bid of traveling, covering everything from the Democratic and Republican Conventions, to Presidential Funerals, to all the Apollo Space Missions. He loved his job and the opportunities it afforded him to meet new and exciting people. Last summer he was able to go back to NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Texas and relive some of those memories. Although Lyle was a member of the Tri State Hunt Club, Moose Club, VFW and a former commander of The American Legion Post #259 in Clinton, it was not what defined him. He was always a simple man, and never forgot where he grew up or where he came from. Those who knew him will never forget his smile! Lyle was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene A. Lincoln; his brother, Melvin Lincoln; his sisters, Gertrude Smith and Patricia Goupil; as well as 2 younger brothers who died in a house fire when they were young. He is survived by his 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; in addition, to multiple nieces and nephews.
