Marie Hayman

July 10, 1942 — February 1, 2016

Remembering the Life of E. Marie Hayman E. Marie Hayman, affectionately known as Marie was born July 10, 1942 to the late Horace and Thelma Moore in Middleburg, Virginia. Upon relocating to the District of Columbia, Marie and her brother Delaney were raised and educated in the Georgetown section of DC. After graduating from Western High School, she enrolled in secretarial school at night to gain additional education and job training. Marie truly adored her family and loved being a devoted Mother to her two beautiful daughters, LaWanda and Trina. She also acted as a surrogate Mom to her adopted daughter, Leah Ford, affectionately known as “Twinn”, as well as to many of the children in the Fort Stanton neighborhood, where she later purchased a home. She was a strong disciplinarian and wanted her children to have the very best in life. In the early years of her career, she worked at The Navy Yard and later fell in love with retail sales, where she worked at a number of local clothing stores. Although Marie was a very private person, she lived life to the fullest with very little regret. She lived life on her own terms and in her own way. She always believed in giving it to you straight, with no chaser; and for those who knew her intimately never doubted where they stood with her. When she and her family moved to Anacostia, Marie instantly became known amongst her neighbors for her good cooking and hospitality. She loved to have a good time and could hand dance with the best of them, and also enjoyed great music and playing cards. It wasn’t uncommon for her to take some of the neighborhood children along with her own to kiddie cabarets, the movies, or invited them over for cookouts in her back yard. As if that wasn’t selfless enough, Marie took exceptional care of her Mother for most of her life. Without a doubt, she gave her the very best of herself! Marie loved flowers and was often seen planting them in her own yard. Among her favorites were roses and tulips, and vibrant colored perennials. As many of the neighbors who were older started aging and became ill, she took it upon herself to check on them and in many instances would cook them food, pick up groceries, or give them rides to the doctor or other places. During the summer months, she loved to sit on her front porch and enjoyed lively conversations. She was an active member of the Fort Stanton Civic Association and later became heavily involved with The Seasoned Seniors social group, where she participated in many activities and volunteered to coordinate a Meet and Greet Neighborhood Reunion, where many of the Fort Stanton residents, old and new came together and enjoyed reminiscing about the good ole days and feasted on some great food. Her desire was for it to become an annual event, and thankfully, although she had become ill, she was able to attend the second one that was held in the Fall of 2015. To show appreciation for her efforts, Marie was given a standing ovation. It goes without saying that she will be sorely missed by many! Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Thelma Moore. She leaves behind to cherish fond memories, her loving daughters, LaWanda and Trina; two devoted granddaughters, Qiana and Mikeah; the love of her life, great-grandson Demari; one brother, Horace (Delaney) Moore; an adopted sister, Juana Malave Deautriell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, neighbors and friends.
