Mary Steed

Mary “Sis” Catherine French Steed, 80, of Falling Waters, WV passed away on December 1, 2023.  She was born September 26,1943, in Cumberland, MD. She is the daughter of the late Ervin Winter French and the late Mildred Pauline French of Ft. Ashby, West Virginia.

Sis married James Steed July 29, 1960, and enjoyed the next 63 years together, raising three wonderful children Jamie (Dave), James (Kim) and Jennifer (Dan). She was blessed with 4 grandchildren, Danielle (Jareth), Daniel, Nathaniel, and Sophie. Sis is also survived by her beloved sister and best friend, Delores “Mim” Wolford and Mim’s loving husband Ron.  Sis loved all her family deeply and is survived by many dear in-laws, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Sis was a long-time resident of Falling Waters, WV, but was born in Cumberland, MD and raised in Short Gap/Ft. Ashby, West Virginia where she attended Ft. Ashby High School. Sis and Jim called many places home over the years, including, Waldorf, MD, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, El Toro, California, Crofton, MD and Upper Marlboro, MD. Mary loved the ocean, but the mountains were her home. She is well known for her natural talent for interior design. 

Her love and kindness for everyone has always been a priority in her life. She is fondly remembered for the love, positivity and support she lavished on her friends and family she remained connected to on social media.  Missing her bright cheery posts, gifs and emoji reactions will leave everyone’s day a little less bright.

In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by her siblings Arnold “Arnie” French and Robert “Buddy” French, her nephew Arnold “Little Arn” French and her niece Amanda French. 

A devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 16, 

2023, from 10:00 am to Noon at Lee Funeral Home in Owings, MD.
