It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maryland Gibson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024. She was born to Benjamin "Benny" Oliver and Estella Mae Whitehead in Pennsylvania County, Virginia, and grew into a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her.
Maryland graduated from high school in Gretna, VA, in 1982 and furthered her education by earning an MBA in Management from Capella University. She dedicated herself to a distinguished career as a government contractor working as a Program Manager, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
Her passion for travel was matched only by her love for her family. Maryland was a devoted wife to Lamont Gibson; a nurturing mother to her daughters, Jessica Dyke of Pittsburgh, PA, and Brittany Dyke of Virginia Beach, VA; and an adoring NaNa to her granddaughter, Sunnie. She also embraced her role in her extended family, lovingly including her stepson, Paul Ongioni and his husband, Brian.
She leaves behind a loving family: her siblings Dorothy Glass-Chase of FL; Officer Kenneth Glass, Joyce Glass and Family, Louis Logan, Junior Garnett Glass (Jackie Glass), and Chief Apostle-Dr. Camilla K. Petty (Deacon Clifton Petty), all of VA. Maryland is also remembered by her nieces and nephews Arkiea Glass-Wiles of FL, Kita Bruce of GA, and Richard and Yasmine of VA, along with many loving cousins, friends, and colleagues.
The funeral service will celebrate Maryland's life and legacy on Sunday, March 3rd, at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, Maryland 20735. The viewing will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, followed by the service from 5:00 to 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice in memory of Maryland. Her spirit, love, and memories will forever be cherished and remembered by all who knew her. May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory continue to inspire and comfort us all. Maryland's spirit and love will forever be remembered and missed. As we say goodbye, we also say thank you to her for the joy, wisdom, and love she gave us. May she rest in peace and her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
