Matthew L. Harris, of Accokeek, MD passed on November 17, 2018 at the age of 84. Born in Rockford, OH the son of Mary Louise and George William Harris. Right after graduation from high school, Matthew entered the US Army. While stationed at the military office, Matthew met Connie. She lived across the street on her family’s farm. Matthew honorably and proudly served his country. After his discharge he and Connie courted briefly before getting married and settling down in Accokeek. Their family grew to include two sons and a daughter. Matthew continued at Maryland University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He worked for the telephone company as it transitioned from Bell Atlantic, to C & P and then Verizon. He retired from Verizon after 35 years of service. Matthew was an accomplished private pilot, who owned his own 1942 plane. He flew in and out of Hyde’s field in Clinton, MD. Over the years, he also built model airplanes and would use remote controls to fly them. He and Connie would travel all over in their RV. They loved the open road and would find fabulous sandy beaches, outstanding campsites and exceptional views of the ocean. Seeing different lighthouses became a passion for them. Most times, you could catch him reading a good novel. Beloved husband of the late Connie Wyvill Harris; devoted father of Steven Michael Harris of Manhatten, NY, Mary Lorraine Kerns and her husband Kenneth Kerns of Bishopville, MD and the late Gregory Allen Harris; dearest brother of Michael Owen Harris of FL, Marilyn Ponce of TX, David Alan Harris of IL, the late Fr. George Gregory Harris and the late Fr. Daniel Edward Harris; beloved grandfather of Katie Marie Kerns Valentine and her husband Luke Charles Valentine of Elkridge, MD, Frank Douglas Kerns and Kenneth Matthew Kerns both of Bishopville, MD.
