After years of battling health issues, Maxine “Nanny” Hackley, 75, of Clinton, MD passed peacefully on July 31, 2015. She was born in Alexandria, VA on March 1, 1940, to the Sarah and Joseph Smith. Maxine attended Alexandria City Public Schools. At a young age, her ambitions led her to leave home to explore her interest in dance and music. Her talents allowed her to travel the country performing as a professional dancer, singer and musician. After touring she settled in Washington, DC where she performed locally at the Howard Theatre with Ike and Tina Turner. Later, she pursued entrepreneurship by becoming a business owner in the early 80’s and opened her own business “Maxine’s Consignment”. Years later, she worked for the Alexandria City and Montgomery County Public Schools. Maxine turned her life over to Christ and continued to live out her life enjoying family and friends in Clinton, MD. Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sarah Smith and her brothers Robert, Edward, Charles, Wilbert and Alvin and sisters, Doris, Shirley anhd Arelia. Maxine is survived by her beloved daughter, Goldenia “Vicky” Cheek. She is also survived by two sisters, Bernice and Vivian and one brother, Donald (Peggy) Smith, all of Alexandria, VA. She also leaves grandchildren Wardell (Magdelin) Jermaine Christopher, all of Clinton, MD. Great-Grandmother of Lauren, Benicio, Johnessa, Jermaine I., Isabella, Karleigh, Scott, Matt, Christopher and Darius. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family members one special caregiver, Bee.
