Meade Burleigh McMullen, affectionately known as "Lizzie", was born September 13, 1935, to the late, Moses and Meade Burleigh in Glen Allen, VA. She departed this life peacefully, Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
She graduated from Virginia Randolph High School, in Glen Allen, Viginia in 1953. Meade graduated from Virginia Union University, in Richmond, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1957.
Meade became a member of St. Peter Baptist Church, in Glen Allen, Virginia as a teenager. She was also a choir member at St. Peter Baptist Church. Upon leaving Glen Allen, Virginia in 1963, Meade became a church member at other Baptist churches in the areas where she lived. Meade remained a faithful Baptist church member throughout her life.
Meade and her husband, Alonzo, joined in holy matrimony on May 25, 1963, and they were married for thirty-seven years. God blessed their union with a daughter, Cheryl Denise. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Meade was a dedicated and devoted educator for forty-three years. She began her education career with Amelia County Public Schools in 1953. Meade was employed as an educator by the District of Columbia Public Schools for thirty-seven years and retired in 2000.
Preceding her death was her loving husband, Alonzo McMullen, parents, Moses and Meade Burleigh, sisters, Marjorie Combs and Goldie Burleigh, devoted niece, who was more like a daughter, Joyce Evans, nephews, Moses Carter and William Harrod, Jr., and niece, Eleanor Proctor.
Meade leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted daughter, Cheryl McMullen, grandson, Aaron McMullen, sister, Pearl Branch (Lawrence), brother, Charles Elam, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
