Michie Kanemitsu Summers was born to Jin’ichi and Kiku Kanemitsu on
February 10, 1932 in the city of Beppu on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan.
She was raised in a seaside town, famous for its picturesque mountains and
natural hot spring spas or “onsens” which she loved.
Michie was educated in the Japanese Public School System. She attended
finishing school to further her education and artistic talents. She was very athletic
and loved to dance, which is how she met her future husband, Frank Summers,
while he was serving in the military in Japan. In 1970 after her husband’s
retirement from the military, they made a new home in Washington, DC, where
they resided ever since.
She explored several career opportunities and held various positions over
the years, settling into a career in retail management with Burlington Coat
Factory until her retirement in 2006.
Michie loved to cook for her family and friends, but also liked watching
cooking shows. She enjoyed watching most sporting events, especially Sumo
wrestling and baseball. After retiring, she kept herself busy handcrafting gifts over
the years with her talent in sewing, crocheting and knitting.
On the morning of Saturday, June 17, 2023, Michie’s spirit passed on from
her worldly vessel at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC. Leaving to cherish her
memory are her two daughters, Naomi Summers and Mika Summers-Gomillion
(Maurice); her son, Keiji Summers; and two step-children, Dale Summers and
Melody Diouf; her niece, Kazuko Kanemitsu; a host of grand-children and great
grand-children, along with other relatives and friends.
