Miriam Gardner Smith Hook, age 80, of Upper Marlboro, MD. Born May 23, 1932 in Darien CT, she was the daughter of Alzamora and Clintona Smith. Passed away May 12, 2013 at her home with family by her side. She is survived by five children, Miriam Riner, Cathy Hook, Christy Bennett, Andy Hook and Charles Hook; brother Palmer B. Smith; 14 grandchildren, Jason, Melissa, Jessi, Mike, Sarah, Rebecca, Cheyenne, Andy, Steven, Samantha, Jonathan, Megan, Madeline, Meredith and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, son John in 1996 and son Harold in 2005. Miriam graduated from UCONN in 1954 and married Harold John Hook, Jr. later that year. Together they had seven children, traveled in connection with her husband's military career and settled in District Heights, MD in 1963. She served as a City Commissioner in District Heights and also on the MNC/PPC. She earned a degree in Dental Hygiene from UMD-Baltimore and served as President of the MDHA.
