Nellie Mae Jones

June 6, 1942 — November 14, 2022

Nellie Mae Jones (Smith) of Martinsburg, WV, passed away peacefully surrounded
by family on Monday, November 14, 2022.
Nellie was born on June 6, 1942, in Brandywine, MD, to the late John Wilton
Smith and Elizabeth Louise Kidwell. She grew up in the Brandywine, MD area
surrounded by seven siblings, four brothers and three sisters who she loved
throughout her life. Nellie attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in
Clinton, MD and attended Gwynn Park High School in Brandywine. While in high
school, Nellie met the love of her life, Delbert Jones, and she married her high
school sweetheart on October 17, 1959. Together, they forged a lifetime of love
that lasted through their courtship and 63 years of marriage.
During her teenage years, Nellie worked at the Waldorf Restaurant in Waldorf,
MD where she met several famous stars of the era including Danny Thomas and
Fats Domino. She loved to show friends and family photos and memorabilia of
stars she met. Later, Nellie worked at NASA Federal Credit Union and was the
long-time head bookkeeper at A&P food store in Waldorf. Once she stopped
working, Nellie pursued her interest in cooking and baking and was known to host
wonderful events for family and friends. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas parties
were legendary and everyone who attended left happy and very full. Nellie’s
other interests included Washington Redskins football, doting on her
grandchildren, collecting vintage coins and currency, and being a member of the
Red Hat Society in Martinsburg, WV. She loved family and friends unconditionally
and her generosity knew no limits.
In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by her brothers, John,
William, Donald, and Robert, and sisters Willa, Shelley, and Elizabeth. She is
survived by her husband of 63 years Delbert, son Steven and his wife Jonelle, son
Gregory and his partner Robert Rudolph, granddaughter Kailie and her husband
William, grandson Cameron and his wife Abigail, and granddaughter Kelsie.
Pallbearers will be Steve Jones, Robert Rudolph, Ray Kendrick, Robbie Smith,
Jonesy Richardson, and Jim Langevin.
