Nina Louise Pyles Guthrie, 86, died peacefully from natural causes on Nov 25, 2015 in Playa Del Rey, CA. She was born at her parent’s home on Aug 3, 1929, in Temple Hills, MD where she lived most of her life. The Pyles family has resided in Prince George’s County since 1671. Eight years ago, Nina moved to California to be with her daughters. She was a graduate of Oxen Hill High School where she played girls varsity basketball. Nina married Glenn Guthrie in 1948 and briefly worked at the US Census in the 1950’s. Nina was asked to work with “Democrats for Nixon” a campaign to promote Democratic support for the then-incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election. Nina was an enthusiastic supporter of her husband Glenn’s (NASCAR Modified Champion 1959) racing endeavors. She supported and campaigned for NASCAR, on issues relating to the auto racing industry. Nina was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Temple Hills, MD for many decades. Other interests were raising her two daughters, supporting her husband’s love of car racing, and travel by land, sea and air. She also loved animals of all shapes and sizes. Nina loved hosting social events with close friends and family. She was the belle of the ball whose door was always open. She was surrounded by numerous nieces and nephews and will be missed by all she touched. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Guthrie Gordon (James) and Nina Jane Guthrie Skjervem (Mark); grandsons Kevin Gordon, Ian Skjervem and Sam Skjervem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Guthrie, her parents, the late Nina Theo and Wilmer Pyles, brothers Vinton, Pete, Dove, and sister Faye. Family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home, Inc. 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Rd, Clinton, MD on Friday, December 4 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 5, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 5203 St. Barnabas Rd, Temple Hills, MD at 2:00 p.m. Interment following in church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory may be directed to the Humane Society of Maryland or Virginia or St. Barnabas Church Cemetery Fund.
