With sadness, we share that Nola Kathleen (Jacobs) Moats passed away peacefully in her home on the afternoon of October 11, 2023.
She was affectionately known as “Kappy” to her family, thanks to a childhood mispronunciation of “Kathy.” Kappy was the kindest soul, with a great sense of fun that she lovingly shared with all of us lucky enough to be in her circle. She enjoyed travel, tinkering on her computer, and making photos and videos. Most of all, she loved her family with all her heart, especially the little children, and considered them all to be “her babies” regardless of how far out the family tree extended.
Kappy was born August 29, 1941 in Washington, D.C. She spent her childhood and youth in the Capital Heights area of Prince George’s County, Maryland. She graduated from Suitland High School in 1959. On January 2, 1961, she married Robert Moats, and after a period of a time as an Army wife, settled back in Maryland. Along with their children, the family settled in Brandywine and enjoyed a home and backyard typically full of friends, nieces and nephews and siblings. When the children were grown, Kappy and Bobby relocated to Lothian, MD where they enjoyed raising flower gardens and grandchildren.
Kappy is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert L. “Bobby” Moats of Lothian, MD and her daughter Laura K. McKenzie (Michael) of Mechanicsville, grandchildren Jessica, Nichole, Christopher and Rachael, their spouses and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Janis and brother Nolan. She will be missed and fondly remembered by many life-long friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Kappy was predeceased by her parents Nolan and Ivy Jacobs, her beloved son Robert Lawrence “Bobby” Moats, sister Carol and an infant great-grandson.
Visitation will be at Lee Funeral Home Calvert (8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings MD) from 5 to 7pm on Monday, October 16, 2023. A memorial service will take place in the Lee Funeral Home chapel at 7pm. Internment will be at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623 on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 10:30 am.
Hospice of the Chesapeake provided support for Bobby and Laura to care for Kappy at home; the family hopes that those wishing to make a donation in Kappy’s memory will consider supporting this worthy organization.
