BGen Orest L. Kohut Ret., age 75, of Camp Springs passed away on April 28, 2021 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Born in Vienna, Austria to Ukrainian parents: Marian Leo Kohut and Eugenia [Magalas] Kohut. Raised in Detroit, Michigan. Graduate of University of Michigan, AFIT, and Industrial College of Air Force. The general entered the Air Force in 1967 as a distinguished graduate of the University of Michigan Reserve Officer Training Corps program. With 20 years of acquisition and resource allocation experience, he has held leadership positions in national priority programs and three major command headquarters, Air Staff, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and Office of the Secretary of Defense. He also made lasting contributions to the Air Force programming and budgeting process while in the Pentagon and European Theater. As chief financial officer, he was responsible for more than 35 percent of the Air Force appropriated budget supporting weapon system research, development, test and repair at 20 Air Force Materiel Command locations. Major Awards and Decorations: - Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster - Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters - Air Force Commendation Medal - 1981 Outstanding Young Men of America Orest had a 30 year Air Force Career. He retired at the rank Brigadier General. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betty" Kohut for 50 years. Orest is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Kohut; 3 sons: Steven (Kris), David (Tania) and Nicholas (Kristi Lee); 6 grandchildren: Sebastian, Pieter, Maia, Oaklee, Brixley and Stashko Kohut; mother Eugenia and sisters: Vera Smits and Helen Gasparovich. He is preceded in death by his father, Marian Kohut. Family invites friends to visit Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, MD 20735 on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 6PM to 8PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Air Force Base Chapel One on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11AM with a one hour prior visitation.
