Raleigh Eugene Bell was born September 6, 1924 in Brewer, Maine. Raleigh had been drawing since the age of 5, which is where his passion for art began. He studied art at the University of Maine, Orono, Columbia Tech and Cochran School of Art, Washington, D.C. He completed the Famous Artist Course in the 1950's. He worked at Freeses Dept. Store in Bangor, ME as a window trimmer in the advertising department. He made drawings for newspaper ads in Washington, D.C. He also worked as an artist/illustrator for the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Corps. of engineers, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Bethany Christian Church, Ft. Washington, MD. Raleigh was predeceased by his wife Charlotte Bell of Capitol Heights, MD and his 3 siblings; Dorothy Gilmore (sister) of Falls Church, VA, Walter Bell (brother) of Camp Springs, MD, Robert Bell (brother) of Brewer, ME. In lieu of flowers donations or contributions in memory of Raleigh Bell may be given to Bethany Christian Church, 7128 Allentown Rd, Fort Washington, MD 20744.
