Raoma A. Smith of Huntingtown, MD, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the age of 84. She was born in Jesse, WV, on September 15, 1933, to Nitah [Walker] and Jay Cook. For a number of years, Raoma worked for an insurance company in Washington, DC. Following that, she worked for the Prince Georges Board of Education, retiring in 1975. Raoma had a number of hobbies and interests. She loved to crochet, bake, play dominoes, Sequence and numerous card games. Her favorite activities at the Solomons Nursing Center were bingo, bowling and socializing with everyone. All those were fun, but she received the most enjoyment in spending time with her family. She always brighten up when they were together. She was the beloved wife of the late James L. Smith, who passed in 1996, and the loving mother of Thomas E. Smith (Martha) and Becky S. Sasscer (Tom). Raoma was the devoted grandmother of seven grandchildren – William Sweatt (Kirsten), James Sweatt (Danielle), Samantha Simonds (John), Crystal Culley (Justin), Jamie Kraeski (Shannon), Sommer Clark (Joe) and Ashlee Nassar (Rob); 16 great-grandchildren and the sister of Gladys Wiley. Raoma was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon Ann Smith-Sweatt, who passed in 1986 and siblings Jay, Bill, Norvel, Jimmy-Dale, Roberta and Georgena. Family invites friends to Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736, on Sunday, May 6 from 2 to 5 pm. A short visitation will be on Monday, May 7 starting at 12 pm until start of Funeral Services at 12:30 pm, at the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, 890 Solomons Island Road, Prince Frederick, MD 20678. Interment will follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Road, Waldorf, MD 20601 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Raoma’s name to the Solomons Nursing Center, Activities Department / Memory Care, P O Box 1509, Solomons, MD 20688.
