Robert Sergio BernardonStone Mason, Race Car Driver, Engine BuilderRobert Bernardon, 75, a nationally renowned drag racer and exceptional stone mason for over 60 years died 2 February 2007 at homeMr. Bernardon was born in Washington, DC and lived in Maryland most of his life.His stone masonary skills can be seen in such buildlings as the White House, the National Cathedral, the Justice Department, the Rayburn House office building, and both the FBI and CIA Headquarters.Mr. Bernardon was inducted into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame in Henderson, North Carolina on October 6, 2002. Included in his many racing accomplishments is 3 time winner of the prestigeous Sturdevant Award for best engineered race car, NHRA National Record holder in the 1950's, 60's and 70's too many times to count. Mr. Bernardon built and raced the nationally known "Jolly Dolly", a 1939 Chevrolet drag racing car, which he named after his wife. Bob and his Jolly Dolly have been featured in such nationally known racing magazines as Hot Rod, Car Craft, Super Stock and Drag Illustrated, Rodders Journal and featured on the cover of the Eastern Drag News. In 2006 Bob and the completely restored "Jolly Dolly" were invited to be among 36 cars and drivers featured in the Gasser Reunion at the National Drag Race event in Indianapolis, Indiana.Mr. Bernardon was also a member of the Hillside Volunteer Fire Department.Mr. Bernardon is survivved by his wife of 56 years, Dolly, son Robert, granddaughter Ashley, brother Mike and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
