Robert Lee Copeland Jr., 82, passed peacefully Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Robert was born May 21, 1942, in Powellton, West Virginia, to the late Robert Lee Copeland, Sr., and Freda Mounts Copeland. Robert grew up in a large family with 9 brothers and sisters. After High School, Robert moved to the National Capital region, eventually finding a career at the Walter Reed
National Military Medical Center. During that period, he courted his future wife Alice, sometimes riding his bike miles from Suburban Maryland to Washington D.C. to see her. They eventually married in 1962 and went on to raise two daughters, Michele and Pam. He was a longstanding, active member of the First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, leading children’s church alongside Alice for many years.
In addition to loving and caring for his family, Robert much enjoyed the outdoors, and loved all Seasons of the year. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and the family enjoyed many camping trips together. He was a stalwart fan of the Washington Reskins and Baltimore Orioles. He loved all forms of fellowship, whatever brought people together; a good meal, pitching horseshoes with friends and games of all types. After retirement, Robert volunteered with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Among his many talents, were gardening, taxidermy, and woodworking. He was a skilled gardener and enjoyed tending to a large vegetable garden. He was a true “Jack of all Trades.”
In addition to his parents, Robert is predeceased by his brother Gary Copeland, and sister Ann Echols.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Alice Faye Stiltner whom he affectionately referred to as his “Bunch.” Daughters Michele Copeland Jett and husband, Tom, Pam Copeland Widmayer, and husband Charlie, sisters Pam Copeland, Janie Hill, Connie King, Karen Copeland, Sherrie Copeland, Nichelle Rafferty and a brother, Mitchell Copeland. He is also survived by his four grandchildren Lita Armbrester, Paige Jett, Travis Armbrester and Kate Jett as well as extended family in Maryland.
