CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF ROBERT WILLIAM DUNNIGAN Robert William Dunnigan, a native of Russellville, Kentucky, was the only son of the late Alice Allison Dunnigan and Charles Dunnigan. He was born on December 11, 1932. Robert attended public schools in Russellville and graduated from Knob City High School. He attended Kentucky State College and graduated with a Teacher’s degree in 1953. Robert joined the United States Marine Corp in July of 1953 attaining the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in July 1957. Subsequently, he was a Teacher and Coach at Pomonkey High School in Charles County, Maryland for several years. Later, Robert was employed by the D.C. Government Employment Services Office as an Administrative Counselor. In 1953, Robert was married to the late Margie Edmonds. This union was blessed with one daughter, Alicia. In 1955, Robert was married to Barbara Pegram. This union was blessed with two daughters, Suzette and Soraya and one son, Kevin. In 1971, after an amicable dissolution of his previous marriage, he and the late Ruth Lee Jackson were married. With this marriage, he acquired one son, Warren Jackson. During their marriage they purchased Rubo-D, a farm where Robert trained and boarded race horses. Upon Ruth’s retirement and after several of her health issues, Robert returned to work with Levitz furniture as a salesman until his retirement. Robert was an active member of the Maryland Democratic Party in the 1980’s and served as a Commissioner on the Maryland Human Relations Board. Robert was an avid sports fan. He especially loved the Redskins and was a season ticket holder for thirty five years. Robert also was a devoted Washington Wizards and a Washington Nationals fan. During the years, he enjoyed traveling to football games, Super Bowls and the Kentucky Derby. In these latter years, Robert’s favorite pastime was watching the Redskins, Washington Wizards and Washington Nationals on television. After membership in Concordia Lutheran Church, Bob joined Bethany Christian Church and remained a member for over 20 years. He was very active in Bethany as an Elder. He and Ruth came to Sunday School and church every Sunday until their health did not permit their attendance. He supported the church’s extracurricular activities, such as yard sales and bazaars, encouraged the youth at their fundraisers and special services, was a Greeter on Sunday morning and for years he faithfully chose flowers from Sharper’s Florist for the Sunday morning services. Bob served on one of the Church’s Long Range Planning Committees and the Evangelism Committee. He was a true servant and tried to do anything he could to serve Christ and the community. He was a strong, gracious, and humble presence among the Bethany family and he will be missed by the Church! He leaves to cherish the memory of his life by his faithful and devoted children- three daughters Alicia Dunnigan, Suzette Dunnigan Whyte (Andrew), Soraya Dunnigan Brandon and two sons Kevin Dunnigan and Warren Jackson; four grandchildren Danielle Dunnigan, Deilia Jackson, Khalilah Jackson Gross (Vernon) and Robert Jackson; four great grandchildren; a host of cousins from Kentucky, including special cousins Katie Allison, Sheryl Alexander, Penny Lockhart, Loyetta Oatis, Victoria Marshall, Angela Stephens and Kimberly Gibbs; a host of relatives in the Washington, D. C. area and his Church family. After Glow By Unknown Author I’d like the memory of me To be a happy one. I’d like to leave an after glow Of smiles when life is done, I’d like to leave an echo Whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing Times and bright and Summer days. I’d like the tears of those who Grieve, to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave When life is done.
