Robert Lee Whitmore, “Bob” or “Bobby” as he was lovingly called was born to Hamie and Mattie Whitmore on September 3, 1946 in Washington, D.C. Bob peacefully departed us at the age of 73 on Saturday, May 23, 2020. Bob attended DC public schools until catching the eye of recruiters at Dematha High School in Hyattsville, MD, where he excelled in academics and basketball. In order for Bob to attend Dematha he had to travel three hours a day by bus. This is just one example of his dedication and hard work. After graduating from Dematha, Bob attended University of Notre Dame on a basketball scholarship, graduating with a degree in Economics. After playing basketball in Europe, he returned to Notre Dame and obtained his Law degree. Bob worked in the oil and gas industry, living and traveling to many places in the U.S. He eventually returned to Washington, D.C, to work at Metrocall. On January 13, 2019, the University of Notre Dame inducted Bob into the ring of honor. Notre Dame honored Bob for his contributions to the Notre Dame community highlighting his achievements on and off the court. Bob is credited with paving the District of Columbia.-to Notre Dame pipe-line for other student athletes. Bob was a devoted, father, brother, uncle and friend. He always stayed focused on the bigger picture and the positive impact he could have on others. He loved a good crab feast no matter what time of year it was. Actually, he just loved food and family celebrations. Bob will always be remembered for his beautiful spirit and energy for life. Bob is lovingly remembered by his son: Robert Whitmore- Sweeny, his brother: Ronald Whitmore, sister: Joyce Whitmore and granddaughter Ellie Leeanne Knapp. He is also survived by his nieces: Shaba Lightfoot, Radaka Lightfoot and Nicole Whitmore, loving companion Nadine Goff and a host of other relatives and friends.
