Rose (Abatino) Piacente, age 90, of Camp Springs, MD went home to Heaven and peace on November 08, 2024.
Rose was born on November 11, 1934, to Michelangelo and Mariangela (Rocca) Abatino. Rose was born in New York City (“Little Italy”), went to Olivadi, province of Catanzaro, region of Calabria, Italy in 1939 and returned to the US in 1950, living in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Rose met Anthony Piacente, then in the US Navy, in Springfield, MA. They married on September 3, 1955. They eventually called Camp Springs, MD their home, in April 1959. As many of that era did, they came to provide a better life and opportunities for their family. She then turned her focus to her own family and had two sons and one daughter, in whom she instilled honesty, a robust work ethic, and a strong family bond. She easily became the family matriarch and did so in good standing. She was selfless, tireless, had the great strength of passion, and her home became a sanctuary for all, as well as many in need. If there were a symbol for Rose’s life, it would be a beautifully set and abundantly laden table of Italian delicacies. Her vast culinary expertise included creating a masterful meal out of whatever was on hand. Rose’s Sunday Dinners and Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes were time-honored traditions at her house. Cooking, for Rose, was about family, friendship, warmth, acceptance, enjoyment, life, and love.
There is nothing Italian mothers like Rose could not do. To be raised by an Italian mother is to be showered in love, kindness, nourishment, and toughness. Italian mothers know how to delicately traipse the fine line between nurture and discipline – so much so, they’ve made an art of it. Italian mothers turn into Italian grandmothers, and a fiercer breed you could not find. There was no interfering with her love, care, or loyalty, for her grandchildren, who adored her. In her life, she made it all seem effortless. Of all of Rose’s happiest memories that she cherished throughout her life were those she made with her family and life-long friends. When she was younger, she was a member in good standing with St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and later with St. Philip the Apostle in Camp Springs. Rose was devoted to God and relied on her faith to sustain her. She also loved watching her game shows and shopping.
Survived by her children, Michael Anthony Piacente (Marsha) of South Riding, VA, Anna Maria Cornell (David) of Indian Head, MD and Antonio Piacente of Waldorf, MD; her grandchildren, Nicolas Piacente, Christopher (Summer) Evans, and Michael Cornell; great-grandchildren Anthony Evans and Georgiana Evans. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony Piacente, her parents, Michelangelo and Mariangela (Rocca) Abatino, and her siblings Antonietta (James) Quinn, Mary (Dan) Fulciniti, Angie (Jim) Iaccarino, and Ralph (Helen) Abatino.
