Russell Dean Torwelle, 91, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland died on June 5, 2015.Born in Ireton Iowa, he was the son of the late Mabel Verry Torwelle and Otto Torwelle.He served in the US Air Force for almost 28 years, retiring with honors. He was a World War II and Korea War veteran. During World War II he joined the Marine Corp. After the war he helped build the AlCan highway through Alaska and Canada. When the Korean conflict broke out he joined the Air Force flying photo recon missions in B-29 bombers. After retiring from the Air Force he worked at the U.S. Census Bureau as a Computer Systems Supervisor.Now in his 50s he decided to go to law school, graduating from the George Mason University School of Law. He pursued a solo law practice in the District of Columbia. A source of great pride was his admission to the Bar of the United State Supreme Court.He was a self-made man rising from poverty to success on sheer determination.Beloved husband of the late Trula Maxine Torwelle (Nee Swinehart); loving father of the late Daphne Torwelle; dearest brother of the late Beverly Torwelle Backus; beloved uncle of Robley Dean Backus (Helen) of Lorton, VA and Byron Torwelle Backus (Tatayana Ovchinnikova) of Silver Spring, MD, and his beloved caretaker, Delores Free of Fort Washington, MD.
