Salvatore "Sammy" Lagana Sr., age 94, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on September 6, 2014.Born February 12, 1920 in Washington, D.C., Sammy was the son of the late Antonio and Angela Lagana. He is survived by four children, Guy Sandridge (Alice) of Berlin, MD, Stephen Sandridge of Lexington Park, MD, Sammy Lagana Jr. (Sandy) of Waldorf, MD and Jane Thompson (Gary) of Fredericksburg, VA; daughters-in-law, Darlene Lagana Blend and Amy Lagana; Also survived by two brothers, Joby, Frank "Icky" and sister Ruth. Sammy had 17 grandchildren, Stacie Sandridge, Christopher King, Denise Lorraine, Melissa Simpson, Bo Lagana, Tommy Lagana, Deanna Lagana, Teddy Kaminiski, Stephen Kaminski, Gary Thompson Jr., Jeromy Thompson, Kenny Lagana Jr., Danielle Lagana, Steven Lagana, Bobby Lagana Jr., Anthony Lagana, Lindsey Lagana and 24 great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his sidekick and beloved pet, Penny. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Louie, Nancy, Leo, Grace and Daniel; children, Kenny Lagana Sr., Bobby Lagana Sr., Rosalie Lagana and Elizabeth Purdy; daughter in law, Darlene Sandridge and his beautiful and devoted wife of 32 years, Jane M. Lagana.Sammy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a caring friend to many. He worked as a professional Truck Driver at Silver Hill Sand and Gravel for 42 years, where he received the Million Mile Safe Driving Award from the Mack Truck Association. His greatest joy was being around family and having family get-togethers. He was a true Italian through and through, and a day spent in the kitchen cooking, socializing and eating good food with family and friends was one of his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, playing cards and driving around with his four-legged best friend Penny. Sammy was best known for his surprise visits, always bearing gifts of produce and goodies. Those closest to him always had a good supply of bananas on hand, thanks to Sammy.
