Sandra "Pinky" Humphrey

Sandra Debra McKinney-Humphrey, 67, died December 4, 2018 at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland, after a long illness. She was surrounded by her husband and loving family members. Sandra “Pinky” was born May 12, 1951, in Washington, D.C., to Samuel and Dorothy McKinney. She was the youngest of six siblings. She graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in 1969 and went on to receive a Master’s of Arts Degree in Mental Health, a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Sociology-Anthropology from Morgan State University and an Associates of Fine Arts in Art General Studies. While at Morgan State University, Sandra became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and subsequently led her own line. Sandra worked for the Department of Justice (DOJ), in Washington D.C. as a Probation Officer in both the juvenile and adult divisions. She had a quality of spirit and fearlessness that enabled her to face all types of danger. The kind of spirit and fearlessness that kept her parents up all night and worried her siblings. Her family would soon learn just how fearless she was, as she fought off an attacker one evening on the campus of Howard University. He ran away; she walked away. She reached the ranks of supervisor at DOJ from which she later retired. Sandra’s hands and creative spirit were her gifts from GOD and she used them well into retirement. She viewed art as a natural process that began with her eyes, emanated through her heart and to her hands. From writing poetry to wood carving, ceramics, sculpturing, drawing, and painting, she amassed a vast collection of written and visual representations of people, places and abstract forms. Seriously, every wall in her home is covered with amazing color and on the tables throughout are sculptures that might look like you. Her work has been displayed at numerous exhibits throughout Washington D.C. and Maryland, including the Marlboro Gallery in Prince Georges County, the Prince Georges Artists Association, Montpellier Cultural Arts Center, the Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, the Touch Stone Gallery in Washington D.C, Trinity University, and numerous fund raisers and private showings. Sandra was the wife of 39 years to William W. Humphrey (Billy); beloved sister to brother, Samuel R. McKinney, Jr. (Javita); sisters, Gloria Ward Wallace (presided in death), Sylvia Able, Sonia Swayze (James), Sharon McKinney; four sister in-laws, Emma Pendergrass, Wilhelmina Franklin, Sandra Humphrey, Barbara Epps (John); two brother in-laws, Melvin Humphrey (Judy), Alfred Humphrey (Cynthia); six nephews, Mathew McKinney (Jennifer), Justin Ward, Carlos Perkins (Yolanda), Brian Swayze (Kimberly), Dominic Ward (Gillian), William Humphrey; seven nieces, Charlene E. Major (Robert), Angela Swayze, Carrie Epps, Malia Humphrey, Rachael Brown Humphrey, Briana Humphrey; four grand-nephews, Matthew “Scotty” McKinney, Torriano Perkins, Garen McKinney, Cole McKinney; five grand nieces, Cierra Major, Breanna Swayze, Celena Major, Reinna Swayze, and Cerenity Major.
