Sharon Staten

Sharon Eileen Staten, daughter of the late William Thomas Staten and Evelyn Dudley Staten Hawkins, was born in Washington, District of Columbia on May 18, 1960. She departed this life for the eternal light on May 5, 2023, in Fort Washington, Maryland.

She received her early education in the public schools of Prince George’s County and graduated from Friendly High School. After completing high school, she attended Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. She served her country honorably in the United States Army for three (3) years, earning the rank of Specialist/E4. A loyal federal employee for over 25 years, Sharon worked for the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of State. She was a faithful member of “From the Heart Church Ministries.” Sharon’s smile and sweet spirit appealed to everyone. She would reach out to anyone who needed a listening ear, a good meal or a helping hand. Sharon loved to read and draw. She was gifted at putting her thoughts in poignant ways through her essays and poetry. She loved cooking, a talent she learned from her grandmother Louvenia Staten. Life for Sharon was not always full of sunshine. In her latter years, she faced some challenges, but because of the power of her faith, she was able to overcome the trials she faced. SHE KNEW SHE WAS LOVED!

Those left to cherish fond memories are Special cousins Jamila Jones Kennedy, Angela Jones de Turbi, Louis Johnson, Koren Kennedy, Norah Kennedy; Aunts Helen Yvonne Staten Jones, Gwen Staten; Great Aunt Lena Henderson, and other relatives and friends.

A memorial gathering will be held in honor and celebration of Sharon's life 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Wednesday May 31, 2023 at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Rd. Clinton, MD 20735. The funeral service will take place at 1:00 pm. Interment in Maryland Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham will be private for the immediate family.
