Shawn Layne Powell, born on May 11, 1979, in Sacramento, California, passed away on July 15, 2024, in Huntingtown, Maryland at the age of 45 after a hard fought, almost two-year, battle with colorectal cancer. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 18 years, Candice; children, Peyton, Nolan, and Evelyn; parents, Bill and Sue; brother, Matt; in-laws: Michelle, David (Sarah), Gina, Mike and Karen; brothers-in-law: Davy, LJ, Bentley, Cody (Breanna), Davonte; sisters-in-law: Teresa , Jamie (Josh), Brittney (Dustin), Heather (Eric), Doodle; nieces and nephews: Layla, Ava, Jocelyn, Aubrey, Lexi, Shiloh, JJ, Jacob, Graham, Eli, Nash and Titus. Shawn is also survived by a large extended family who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Joey, and father-in-law, John.

Shawn was a dedicated educator, having earned degrees from Sacramento City College, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Walden University. He passionately served the educational community in Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) as a teacher and coach.

Shawn's faith in Jesus clearly guided every aspect of his life, serving as the foundation for his actions and values. He was someone who truly embodied the spirit of community and family. His dedication to volunteering with youth sports highlighted his commitment to giving back and shaping young lives. Beyond his personal achievements in football, he evolved from being an excellent player in high school and college, to a respected coach and mentor in multiple sports. Shawn's love for athletics was passed on to his children. He remained supportive in all their activities, illustrating his dedication to family and his role as a caring and involved parent. Shawn's love for entertaining friends and family highlighted his bigger-than-life personality, always evident in his enjoyment of bringing people together. His enthusiasm for finding bargains shows both a practical mindset and a joy in making the most of resources. Those who were lucky would catch his bargain tutorials during a live video on Facebook.

Overall, Shawn's life revolved around fundamental values: faith, family, community, and a strong dedication to making a positive difference.

The family has entrusted Lee Funeral Home in Owings, Maryland with the arrangements. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and the funeral service will be conducted at Chesapeake Church on Wednesday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. Shawn's life and legacy will be celebrated by all those he touched with his fierce spirit and heartfelt dedication to his family and community.
