On December 13, 2023, at the age of 78, Shelton “MJ” Johnson departed this life surrounded
by his family. Shelton “MJ” Johnson was born on November 09, 1945, to the late Margaret
Johnson from Virginia.
Reared by his mother and grandmother, Shelton was known for his infectious laugh and hard-
working personality. After graduating from high school, Shelton enlisted in the Navy, where he
served as a chef and a recruiter.
Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy, Shelton served as a guard at Lorton Prison and soon after
started his career in the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. Shelton’s knack for
attention to detail and his ability to garner all respect from his customers, made him a favorite
“mail man” to the neighborhoods he proudly served. He often carried little dog biscuits in his
pockets for his furry buddies.
In 2000, Shelton met Sharon Lee Johnson (formerly Williams) and let’s just say...sparks flew
at the barbeque! His courtship of Sharon was filled with numerous dates and frequent jaunts all
around Maryland and Virginia. He proposed to Sharon in 2004, married in 2006, where his
family grew to a cache of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Shelton and Sharon resided in District Heights, Maryland, where they both enjoyed attending
and participating in Church activities. He loved serving the Lord and the
Maple Springs Baptist Church family. Shelton served as Chaplain for the Senior’s Ministry,
member of the Men’s
Ministry, and President of the Married Couple’s Ministry. Shelton was a CHEERFUL giver,
attending noonday Bible studies, serving in the kitchen and volunteering at many other Church
functions.
In 2020, Shelton and Sharon moved to Charles County, where he could often be seen puttering
about in the yard. Family and neighbors would often jokingly remind him that the yard didn’t
need to be farmed daily. He was never seen in the yard without his loyal head rag and
signature floppy bucket hat or one of his many favorite hats (NFL Cowboys, USPS, MLB, etc.).
Shelton is preceded in death by his mother Margaret, grandmother Alberta Johnson and
stepdaughter Kimberly Clark.
Shelton leaves to honor and cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 17 years,
Sharon Lee Johnson. He is also survived by a multitude of (step) children and grandchildren,
respectively, Tawana Jackson (Braylon Sr.), Toni Gross (Curtis), Andre M. Williams (Fanta),
Tiffany Smalls (Rafael Sr.), Antoine Tindal (Shelby), Charles Hurlston, Ayanna Kornegay
(David), Brittani Jackson, Brayana Jackson, Braylon Jackson Jr., Josiah Jackson, Rhyan Gross,
Carter Gross, Conner Gross, Harlem Williams, Brooklyn Williams, and a host of great-
grandchildren, family and friends.
