Shirley Matilda Harrer

June 12, 1934 — November 24, 2007

HARRER SHIRLEY MATILDA HARRER, 73 Passed away surrounded by her loved ones at Southern Maryland Hospital Center on November 24, 2007 after a long illness. Born in Washington, DC on June 12, 1934, Shirley grew up in Anacostia. She graduated from Western High School in Washington, DC. After completing Business College, she started her own real estate firm in 1971, Royal Oak Realty with offices in Clinton, Camp Springs and Ocean City, Maryland. Shirley said she started working in real estate because she enjoyed being a "people person". Being one of Southern Marylands top realtors, Shirley held the office of President of the Prince Georges Board of Trade in 1983, as well as State and National Office in the Womans Council of the National Board of Realtors and has received their Omega Tau Roe Medallion for Distinguished Service. As President of the Board of Trade, she started two annual events that continue today, a Crab Feast and the Womans Council Prayer Breakfast. Shirley liked to tell fond memories of her childhood, working at her mothers Grocery and Gas station located at the intersection of Woodyard, Dangerfield and Old Alexandria Ferry Roads in Clinton, commonly know as "Coles Corner". As a little girl she would stand on a box to wait on customers because she couldnt see over the counter. She inherited her love of gardening from her mother, Elsie. Shirley will always be remembered for her beautiful red hair, infectious laugh and her bubbly personality. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence "King" Cole; mother, Elsie Cole and brother, George "Baldy" Cole. Shirley leaves behind her only son, Hans Harrer, and brother Herbert "Herbie" Cole, both of Temple Hills, Maryland. Shirley will truly be missed by her family and many close friends. Services will be held at Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, Maryland, (301) 868-0900. Viewings will be held on Thursday, November 29 from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m., where Memorial Service will begin at 7 p.m. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Shirley Matilda Harrer please visit our Sympathy Store.
