Shirley Ivey , the first of four children born to the late Horace Ivey and Vivian Morrissette Ivey, was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 14, 1949. She began her education in Detroit public school system. The family moved to Washington, DC in 1958 settling in northeast Washington, DC. In 1961 the family moved to Brandywine Street SE where the family resided permanently. Shirley attended Hart Junior High School and graduated in 1967 from Ballou Senior High School. She was very active in the choir and in the band. She participated for three years in the District of Colombia Youth Chorale which performed extensively around the city. She had a full and deep alto voice which stood out in the group. Upon high school graduation, she attended the former DC Teachers College for two years. Shirley began her employment with the District of Columbia government which included the Metropolitan Police Department, the office of the Mayor and the Department of Finance and Revenue. She also worked at the IRS and several other government agencies. Her favorite position was working at the District of Colombia City Council office where she excelled. She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and joined the youth and young adult choir that she truly adored. Shirley had a host of friends and will always be remembered for her engaging smile and her ability to lift the spirits of all who ever came in contact with her. She leaves behind her adoring sisters Gloria Ivey and Sherrie Ivey Lackings (Nelson Lackings). Her loving nephew Skyyler Browne (deceased). Nieces Brandii Ivey, Vivian Ivey, Ceshelle Evans and Cherie Evans and a host of other relatives and friends. Shirley enjoyed planting and nurturing flowers. She loved dogs especially Joe, her favorite. She loved good food and loved to laugh and make others laugh in the process. She had a fantastic sense of humor and a very quick wit. Her laugh and compassion will truly be missed by many.
