At UVa, he met his future wife, Wendy Cope, and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Upon graduating with a BA in Environmental Engineering, he was commissioned in the Navy, then earned his wings as a Naval Flight Officer following training in Pensacola. He married Wendy, the love of his life and best friend, in 1986. Brandy continued aviation training at Whidbey Island, WA, where he became an electronic counter-measures officer in the EA-6B Prowler, the Navy’s premier electronic warfare aircraft. He joined the Yellow Jackets of VAQ-138 and deployed to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN-68). He left active duty in 1993 and earned a master’s in Environmental Engineering from Old Dominion University. A life-long nature lover, Brandy embarked on his environmental career, specializing in ground water and hydrogeology. He worked for the Virginia Dept. of Environmental Quality in Richmond and Virginia Beach, and later for the Maryland Geological Survey. He achieved a career goal of working for the Department of Defense, first for the Air Force, then with the Air National Guard as Water Program Manager. A career highlight was being selected for DOD’s Executive Leadership Development Program, which he completed in 2007. Throughout his civilian career, Brandy actively served in several Navy Reserve units, including TACRON 2286 and C2F JFACC in Norfolk, where he was a plank owner, and most recently with the Office of Naval Research in Washington, DC. In addition to family and friends, Brandy’s other great love was his country home, Froggy Bottom Farm, in Stanardsville, VA, where he happily rode his tractor and explored with Colby. He pursued kayaking, cycling and adventure racing. Life-long friends include Bryan Loane, Bo Tayloe, Greg McNeer and Chip Stover, who faithfully visited him throughout his illness. His loyal pets, Scout, Barley and Margaux, miss him greatly. Brandy will always be remembered for his adventurous spirit, strength, modesty, kindness, and intelligence. He served as a leader and role model to many, and was a devoted father and husband. A memorial service will be held Dec. 5 at noon at All Saints Episcopal Church, 100 Lower Marlboro Rd, Sunderland, MD.
