With profound sadness and immense gratitude for a remarkable life, we celebrate the life of Uvaghn Lee Coleman, 95, of Fort Washington, Maryland, on December 10, 2024.
Uvaghn was born to be a devoted wife and mother—a role she embraced with unparalleled love, grace, and dedication. She was born on April 6, 1929, to John and Helen Ramsey Lee in Ellington, South Carolina. Uvaghn accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. In June of 1931 she became the proud older sister of her beloved brother, John Lee, Jr. (deceased). On December 23, 1947, in Aiken, South Carolina, Uvaghn married the love of her life, Theodore R. (T.R.) Coleman Jr. Together, they embarked on a journey of love and partnership that lasted more than six decades. After their wedding, they traveled to Washington, DC, for their honeymoon—and never left. Here, they built a life together filled with love, family, and purpose.
Uvaghn was the proud and loving mother of five children: Andre Jose Coleman (deceased), Theodore (Teddy) R. Coleman, III (deceased), Sandra Coleman Perkins, Michael Anthony Coleman, and Yvette Renee Coleman. Her unwavering dedication to her family provided the foundation that allowed her husband to begin his illustrious career as a firefighter. Through her strength and ability to provide and care for their children, Theodore rose through the ranks to become the Fire Chief of Washington, DC, holding this esteemed position from 1983 to 1988.
A natural nurturer, Uvaghn also extended her compassion to her community as a substitute nurse in the Prince George’s County Public Schools, where her warmth and care touched the lives of many. A true beauty inside and out, Uvaghn often shared fond memories of being voted the most attractive girl at AR Johnson High School, in Augusta, GA—a title she proudly recalled with a smile to family and friends. Her elegance was matched by a vibrant personality and a zest for life. She found joy in music, dancing, and playing Pokeno.
Uvaghn was a woman of remarkable strength and resilience. She faced life’s challenges with grace, overcoming a battle with breast cancer and living courageously in the face of Alzheimer’s disease in her later years. Through it all, Uvaghn’s life was defined by her generosity, grace, and unshakable faith. She was a pillar of her community and a guiding light to all who knew her. Her legacy extends far beyond her family, leaving an indelible mark on every life she touched.
She is survived by her children Sandra Coleman Perkins, Michael Anthony Coleman, and Yvette Renee Coleman, along with 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandsons, and 2 great-great grandsons.
