Virginia Lee Linthicum Zacharek

March 10, 2016 — March 25, 2016

Virginia Lee Linthicum Zacharek, of Temple Hills, MD, passed peacefully on March 25, 2016 at the age of 100. Born in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Anna Stumph Linthicum and the late Basil Clark Linthicum. Virginia grew up in Washington, Dc during the era of the Great Depression. Virginia graduated high school and at that time, Virginia and the girls from the graduating class began a sorority; the Alpha Sigma Theta Sorority. Virginia was a lifelong member of the Alpha Sigma Theta Sorority and those friendships that began in high school, remained with them throughout their lives. They continued with parties, beach outings, and monthly gatherings and kept in touch, right up to their deaths. Virginia was the last living member. Virginia married her sweetheart, Frank Joseph Zacharek, after a USO dance and together they celebrated 46 years of marriage before his death. Frank owned Clinton Surplus Store and Virginia worked with him as his bookkeeper. Virginia and Frank loved children. For over 15 years, they opened their home to many children as Foster Care Parents. Some of the children remained with them for several years. Family was most important for Virginia, and her nieces, Elaine and Jeanne, recalled many happy memories shared over Sunday family dinners. Her daughter, Lorie, remembers her mom as a feisty woman, often times stomping her foot to relay her firmness. Virginia also loved her church, Hillcrest Baptist. She was so devoted, she would never leave the area because of her love for her church. She was church treasurer for some time in addition to supporting the church throughout the years both financially and with her time. Virginia also had a green thumb and could make anything grow, thus her garden providing living proof of that over the years. Virginia is the Beloved Mother of Lori Beth Brooks of Port Charlotte, FL; Dear Sister of Donald Linthicum of Rockville, MD; Cherished Aunt of Elaine Weems (Henri) of McClean, VA and Jeanne Mackey (Roger) of North Potomac, MD; Loving Grandmother of Jennifer Miller Newman and Katie Abbott both of Port Charlotte, FL; also survived by nieces and nephews, Mary Virginia White of Frederick, MD, David Linthicum (Brenda) of Fairfax, VA, Diane Campbell (Gordon) of Fairfax, VA and Barbara Paulaitis of Fl. In addition to her husband, the late Frank Joseph Zacharek, Virginia was pre-deceased by her siblings, the late Margaret Cherer, John and Lawrence Linthicum.
