Witold B. Monkiewicz Witold “Veet” Monkiewicz, aged 93, died peacefully in Waldorf, Maryland on Valentine’s Day and is now reunited with his true love, his wife of 52 years, Mary Elouise (Long) Monkiewicz who preceded him in death on January 8, 1996. They were married in Boise, ID at St. John’s Cathedral on June 7, 1943 and were blessed with one daughter, Patricia Ann on October 29, 1945. Veet was born on August 28, 1920 in Brockton, Massachusetts to the late Vincent and Zofija (Harasimowicz) Monkiewicz. He had two sisters that preceded him in death, Philomena and Albina (known as Sister Hermeline, FSSJ) and they grew up across the street from their beloved parish, Our Lady of Ostrabrama (now known as St. Edith Stein). He graduated from Brockton High School in 1938 where he starred on the varsity basketball team. A patriot, Veet enlisted in the Army Air Corp as an aviation cadet in June, 1941. He graduated from the Army Air Corp Advanced Flying School and earned his wings on March 7, 1942 at Kelley Field in Texas, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. During WWII, he had secret orders to fly anti-task missions in the First Observation Squadron in Panama to protect the Panama Canal and instructed incoming pilots in Boise, ID. He was a command pilot with over 7,000 registered flight hours. Veet earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Jackson College in Honolulu, Hawaii. He served his country faithfully in a variety of capacities all across the world throughout his career until his retirement on May 1, 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring, Veet and Elouise made their home in Camp Springs, MD. Golf was a passion of his retirement. Veet played a lot of golf at Andrews Air Force Base and made custom clubs for officers. He was known as Dr. Golf, “he had the cure for your game”. At the age of 77, Veet shot his age on the west course. He had a natural curiosity of all new inventions and had a particular zeal for technology. Veet was a member of St. John The Evangelist Parish in Clinton, MD, with a lifelong devotion to his Catholic faith and always had concern for others before himself. Veet’s core values were steadfast – God, Country, Family. Left behind to cherish his memory are many treasured friends and family; his daughter, Pati (Jack) Darby of Mishawaka, IN, his four grandchildren, Mike (Manon) McCann of Virginia Beach, VA, Carrie (Matt) Steenbeke of Granger, IN Chris (Dave) Grossnickle and Kevin (Carrie) McCann of South Bend, IN, his six great-grandchildren, Dani (Ryan) McAfee, Katie, Joey and Billy Steenbeke, Amy and Bobby Grossnickle, and his great-great-grandchild, Gracie McAfee.
